A growing number of people who seek justice in civil or family courts today simply can’t obtain it, because of how expensive the process has become. A trial can easily cost over $25,000… as long as it lasts no more than two days. And who can afford a $300-an-hour (or more!) lawyer? Local legal clinics and government community justice centres try to help, but their efforts are hampered by the Bar, the professional association representing lawyers, because it fears citizens will stop using its members. Le procès reveals a vicious circle where the average individual seeking justice becomes a system’s circumstantial and financial hostage.
